Visual analysis of the impact of periodic wakes on the pressure side of a turbine blade

Abstract Turbines are core components in jet engines for flight propulsion, power plants, and other important energy conversion processes. They composed of successive rows blades so that wakes upstream reach subsequent where they perturb the flow an unsteady manner. At point a wake reaches downstream blades, perturbation forms so-called negative jet. In this work, we show partially fulfills conditions anti-splat. Based on finding, enhance anti-splat detection algorithm developed by present authors previous work apply it to direct numerical simulation data turbine cascade with wakes. This provides sound framework suitable visualization approaches investigate phenomenon even very complex conditions, as is alteration boundary layer along pressure side blade. The approach allows clear interaction, which was not possible evidence methods, providing new insight into physics flow. use paths shows up affect reported physical analysis, made proposed approach, demonstrates usefulness method application domain. generalization flows compressors, pumps, blade-tower interaction wind engineering fields possible.
